Friday Brenna Morgart was killed. The details as they continue to come out get worse and worse. She was Prom Queen. She had graduated days earlier. She had her whole life ahead of her.
She was hit by the car of a former classmate, dragged into his car, driven miles away and dumped into a field. He is in custody.
The hate group here in Topeka jumped immediately on this. God killed her cause she didn’t conform to their teachings. God killed her cause he hates fags and this is our punishment to tolerating homosexuality. They said they would picket her funeral.
We quietly came up with a plan to put ourselves between Brenna and hate. Because that group could easily search and find us talking about them and what we were doing we asked for help, donations and participation without saying what we were going to do.
And the help came. Some went to thrift stores to purchase materials, some went to department stores and hardware stores and purchased materials. Then more people showed up to help build something but didn’t know what. Amazing.
We in essence built a chain. A wall of people and posts and bed sheets and staples to shield the people that knew and loved Brenna from… filth.

Then the morning of the Funeral, we gathered. 13 people who for the most part didn’t know each other. None even knew Brenna. Several had never participated in a SBKS event before. This was love. This was community. This was amazing.
We met across the street from the church with the Topeka and County Police. We worked with the PD to be perfectly within the law. We waited. We were told that so many areas surrounding the church were off limits to protest that our efforts though appreciated, were unnecessary. The Dumb Dumbs couldn’t go near the church and they couldn’t protest near the church within one hour prior to the funeral’s start time. We were invited to set up on church property but felt, if they cannot come near the property then we would be blocking no one. The American Legion/Patriot Guard showed up and set up their flags and it was beautiful.
We talked with the police and each other. We hugged and shook hands and agreed that a battle not fought is the best kind of battle. We didn’t want to distract from Brenna’s day and left at 9:30 (one hour prior to start time).
I learned later that the Dumb Dumbs did show up… blocks away… at 9:45. Because they were far enough from the Church they didn’t have to abide by the time restraints. This really angered me when I found out. It bothered me. ‘They won’ I thought. But it’s not true.
If you think about how the dozens of people that donated, gave time, purchased, hauled, tweeted, posted, gathered and prepared to run the risk of being badgered and potentially sued - Strangers that got together with the courage to stand up to one of the most vile bullies in American history. Then we won. Love conquers all. And next time? We’ll be even more ready. Maybe we set up and they move even farther down the block. Then farther. Then stay home.

I have so much going on at once right now my brain is slowing way down.
Meanwhile the world around me is going at a hundred miles an hour.
I’m more clear and calm during high stress situations, so I’m enjoying this high.
We are going to help block something horrible.
We need donated King/Queen unfitted bed sheets (dark colors) by tomorrow.
They will be sewn and used Wednesday morning.
Wednesday morning we will need Volunteers. If you are in the area we need help. Please tell your friends and family. Sheets tomorrow and a few hours Wednesday.

An 18 year old girl from Topeka, KS went missing earlier today after going out for a walk.
Last seen wearing a light blue tee shirt, Nike shoes, and Nike athletic shorts with zebra trim.I personally know Brenna and she is least deserving of this situation. Please, please get the word out about this.

She was struck by the car of 20 yr old Dustin Leftwich then taken three miles away to a field where he dumped the body.
He has been arrested. She was 18. She was Prom Queen. She graduated days ago. She had her entire life ahead of her. She was crushed and dragged and dumped. We went about our day yesterday morning as her parents worried. We went further into our day as she layed alone in a field. Broken.
This kid drove around. Made a plan. Created a story. Wished it would go away. I wish I could give her one of my days on this earth. I wish I wasn’t completely terrified by random acts of violence.
I am a ball of rage and sadness. The thought of losing my child brings me to the brink. If someone hit and killed my daughter with a car and hid her body and left her, I would cease to be human.
I would cease to be human.
I would cease to funtion in any other form but destructive murderous rage.
